Grohnde NPP

Grohnde nuclear power plant is located near the town of Hameln in Lower Saxony on the banks of the River Weser. It was commissioned in 1985 and has been operated safely and successfully without exception ever since. In terms of annual power production Grohnde has been among the world’s top ten nuclear power plants several times and has even been world champion power plant on eight occasions.

Following Germany’s decision in 2011 to implement an accelerated phase-out of nuclear energy, Grohnde will cease commercial operation by 31 December 2021. After a post-operation period of at least 5 years, the power plant will gradually be dismantled.

Did you know?

On average the Grohnde nuclear power plant generates about 11 billion kW/h of electricity a year which corresponds to the annual demand of three million 3-person households. Grohnde thus supplies roughly 15% of the power generated in Lower Saxony.

Climate protection: Every year the Grohnde nuclear power plant produces roughly 11 billion kW/h of low-carbon electricity, thereby saving almost 10 million tons of CO2.
