Dismantling of Isar 1 nuclear power plant starting in April

31 March 2017

Work can start in earnest on dismantling Isar 1 NPP (KKI 1): the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection (StMUV) has agreed to utilisation of the First Permit for Decommissioning and Dismantling the Plant (1. SAG) as from 1 April 2017 and has ordered immediate enforcement. In its letter, the supervisory authority confirmed that it was in the public's interest and also in PreussenElektra's overriding interest to implement the permit immediately.

PreussenElektra obtained the dismantling permit on 17 January 2017 and notified the authorities at the end of January that it wanted to implement it on 1 April this year.

Site Manager Sebastian Wittmann had this to say about the project: "Most of the preparations for dismantling have been completed – now work can really start. Initially all dismantling work will be restricted to dismantling systems and plant components that are no longer required for the first dismantling phase. These include, for example, the plant's turbine generator set with its associated auxiliary systems and the pipework insulation on the water-steam circuit. When planning the dismantling work, careful consideration has to be given to each action to ensure that it does not impact on any of the systems that are still required, such as fuel pond cooling, for example."

All dismantling activities are subject to institutional control, as is so-called post operation.
